Sunderland dentist joins the Barmy Army Ashes 2010 Perth

Sometimes in life an opportunity to do something comes your way that would be foolish to turn down....

Such an opportunity came my way this month at the end of a very stressful year and I just thought sod it ! you only live once. That opportunity was a trip to Perth in Western Australia to see the Ashes test match at the beginning of an Australian summer.as well as feeling in need of a break the UK weather was dire and a few pieces of the jig saw came together...

  • Two flights to Perth were available with Emirates
  • a very generous offer from a patient of a house and car to use in Perth (thank you David)
  • Two match day tickets very kindly provided by Paul Collingwood , a gesture from a world class cricketer and Sunderland supporter for which I will be forever grateful
  • My lovely wife Liz asked the school if my son could be cleared to come

So there we have it , a boys trip that even Carling would have difficulty putting together !

The flight to Australia certainly makes you realise how big this world is as we sat through twenty hours of flying (good service from Emirates I might add ).
Eight hours of time difference and thousands of miles of flying, but the journey was worth it when 90 degrees and sunshine greets you .
Perth is a beautiful, refreshingly underpopulated for a major city and with very friendly locals.

Forgive the lack of sensitivity to the UK climate as I post this picture but I couldn't help myself. Makes me wonder why I continue to live in the north east.

This is rockingham Beach during the school summer holidays , I can only imagine what this would look like if it was Seaburn beach on a similar day in Sunderland, quiet eh ?

As for the cricket ...
What a buzz to see the WACA full on the first day , many of them Barmy Army English generating a fantastic atmosphere.
Due to the kindness of Paul Collingwood it was a privilige to have a seat in the members pavillion at the heart of Aussie cricket, great banter I might say.  Ninety degrees made the famous grassy banks of the WACA a big attraction ans so lying in the sun it was for me and my son David (Sunderland shirts on of course) .

It was  a stunning start by the Poms, sitting on the grass when Colly took Ponting with a world class catch brought the hairs up I might add. The wheels came off but it didn't spoil the spectacle of seeing two of the best teams in the world scrap it out in front of our eyes , priceless !

To round off this trip of a lifetime two of my favourite bands ever just happened to be playing in Perth whilst we were here...

Saturday and a trip to see U2 supported by JayZ on their 360 tour was a bit special , take a sneak view of it on this you tube clip               click here

Following this, on the Sunday my current favourite band Muse were in town , they were sensational !

So there we have it .... A trip that money can't buy.
This dentist can't believe how lucky he has been to be able to do this with his son, a lifetime memory.

I would just like to thank the following people for making this great trip happen for us...

  • Frank Curry - for setting up the tickets with Colly for us
  • Paul Collingwood for putting himself out for us (and the Ponting catch )
  • David and Lorraine Carr for their enormous generosity with house and car
  • The brilliant team at Olivers Dental Studio, so good ,I never think twice about leaving the Studio in their hands, means a lot.            http://www.oliverdental.com
  • Liz Oliver, a Mrs supreme, for letting her lads go so close to Christmas

Lifting Spirits With Dentistry - Cosmetic Dentist Sunderland - Olivers Dental Studio

Easing pain and producing a healthy smile for our patients is what gets us dentists out of bed on a morning.
Add to that the pleasure of making a patient feel better about themselves and you have the key ingredients that explain a dentists job satisfaction.
  • So how do we make patients feel better about themselves ?
Modern trends in cosmetic dentistry have opened up a world of smile correction to a wide range of patients and not just the Hollywood brigade.

Perhaps we should ask Pam, a Great Grandmother and a patient of Oliver's for over twenty years. A fan of cosmetic dentistry ?

You bet....

"I had a lot of gaps from years ago"
"Michael filled the gaps and changed my smile with porcelain five years ago"
"Its the best thing I ever did"

Pam was able to have her life long dream of a gap free smile with a combination of porcelain veneers and bridgework. Treatment involved both her upper and lower teeth. We were able to restore her teeth to a state Pam had not seen for over forty years. One particularly happy great grandma I think you will find !

Maybe we should introduce you ro Darri , a year or two younger than Pam, but with just the same frustrations with an otherwise healthy smile.
Darri was not comfortable with the uneveness of his smile, caused by spacing of front teeth that had developed a little narrower than we would have wished.

With the help of six porcelain veneers added to his front teeth, we were able to achieve a complete transformation of Darri's smile. Minimal tooth adjustment was required and we were able to limit adjustment to front teeth only so saving precious tooth tissue in posterior teeth.

Darri recently commented on Facebook  "Its the best money I've ever spent "

When you are a pretty young lady with a developing career in modelling, confidence to smile is paramount.

Meet Kimberley, who knocked on the door at Olivers Dental Studio with just those frustrations. With a previous attempt at porcelain restoration achieving a poor symmetry to her smile, Kimberley turned to Olivers for a mini smile makeover. With a combination of crowns and veneers at the front of her mouth Kimberley now has a smile to match her model looks. Self esteem restored !

I hope you are starting to understand why dentistry can be highly rewarding when we can change peoples lives like this.

If you would like to have a free smile assessment at Olivers, call us up at 0191 5282340 or send us your comments and frustrations via the web site by clicking on the link   http://www.oliverdental.com/

Let us show off a little more, by introducing David with his life transformational smile dentistry at Oliver's

It may be possible to keep our treatment options simple, with modern tooth whitening techniques.
A simple home whitening therapy, combined with in surgery power whitening, can produce a remarkable improvement in the quality of a smile.

Meet Steve , a local journalist, who was frustrated with a darkening of his once white teeth with the passage of time. With otherwise healthy teeth, he was happy to accept a slightly uneven smile, but was delighted with a treatment that jumped him up a remarkable ten shades.

We recommended Enlighten tm tooth whitening, a system we have had outstanding success with for many years. Steve carried out his two weeks home whitening and then returned for our deep bleaching, in surgery, power light system.
Our photographs below, untouched , reveal the remarkable change in tooth colour we were able to achieve for Steve.

We have just touched on a few of the wide selection of smile enhancement treatments available to visitors of Oliver's Dental Studio.

We offer free smile assessment visits ,easily arranged through our smile advisory  team at 0191 5282340,  six days a week. Our dedicated smile page on our web site  click  will give you more examples of this rewarding dental care.

2010 at Olivers draws to a close - Sunderland dentist +cosmetic dentist

2010 turned out to be the most exciting year in our 25 year history for many reasons.....
From the opening of our new two floor extension in the Spring, to our recent nomination for four National dental awards in London its been a breathless year. In a difficult year for the UK and business in particular, our continued success centres on a relentless drive to improve our service to our new patients.

Extreme customer service breeds patient loyalty and so we constantly endeavour to raise our standards far beyond those of our competitors.
Examples of recent developments include.....
The launch of our very own i phone app , FREE to download at http://www.oliverdental.com  . This exciting app makes us one of a handful of dentists in the world who are able to offer this product. Hugely interactive, the app has an incredible feature that allow you to photograph your smile on your i phone to have one of our dentists to view without you even having to visit - how cool is that ?
Try it for yourself , particularly if you are unhappy with your smile and we can advise on some of our excellent smile correction treatments.
Patients convenience is paramount to us and so a major revamp of our surgery hours will make a visit for busy people so much easier. We know offer Monday to Fridays from 8.30 till 7.00pm and Saturday 8.30 till 1.00  We know of no other practice in the North East of England that can match such a level of convenience for their patients.
We have a reputation for excellent front desk service and we are proud to be able to add to this as our new signing Suzanne joins the team. She has a wealth of experience in customer service and should prove to be a real asset to our reception team.

Suzanne will help us with an increasing work load at the front desk as Oliver's have just signed an exciting agreement to join forces with a brand new sports physiotherapy company, Complete Sports Medicine. Fronted by ex Sunderland AFC physiotherapist Peter Friar they will offer patients excellent physiotherapy, acupuncture, nutritional advice and exercise science. On a sessional basis starting early December, the service will add to the range of treatments under the roof of Olivers Dental Studio. Our next blog will have more detailed information on this exciting service as the Complete Sports Medicine web site launches. Watch this space.
We have for many months had huge frustration with our reliance on letter and envelope communication with our patients. Most of us are frustrated by large quantities of paper dropping through our letter box and so electronic communication will become more the norm for Olivers. e mail and texting will form the heart of this change but please consider joining our Facebook fan page  at  link   or our brilliant livechat feature. Live chat contacts us directly during office hours and we allocate a staff member to reply to your request as soon as we can.

We also took a big step into charity support this year , the highlight being boss Michaels trip to Morocco to help the Berber children of the Rif Mountains. Helping others who have much less than ourselves has become a focus for our team. Thousands of pounds was raised by the trip, funded solely by the dentists themselves, and a start was made helping these lovely children with very poor teeth. Thank you to all who helped us.

So we hope you can see why the boss calls 2010 breathless and hope that 2011 will continue to excite you as we look to progress further.

Olivers Dental Studio Awards Success - Sunderland

Sunderland dentist Michael Oliver is this morning very proud of his team as they picked up the prestigious City Marketing Award at the Portfolio Sunderland Business Awards.
Staged at the splendid banqueting suite of the Stadium of Light, the evening was bristling with Sunderlands leading business folk and their teams. It was a real honour for Michael's dental studio to be shortlisted in no fewer than three major categories...
Individual of the Year 2010  - Katherine White - for her outstanding efforts during the expansion of the Studio and her dedication to the success of the business.
Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 - Michael Oliver
Marketing Campaign 2010 - Joanne Barella

And the winner is ....

JOANNE BARELLA  for her brilliant, year long campaign to raise the profile of Olivers Dental Studio. Joanne with the help of her marketing team have raised the new patient figures for the practice significantly in a difficult time for dentistry with the recession.
Joanne is the first to admit that the help of her whole team has been invaluable, including Beverley,Toni and Katherine in particular for praise.
Special mention too for the guidance and energy of marketing coach Tony Gedge and the team at M.P.O.D .

Customer service and high quality dental care will always be foremost in the success of the Studio but we are very aware that our message needs to be out there for the continued success of our brand.
Olivers have raised their internet profile significantly this year, in particular with their use of social networking to help keep patients abreast of the huge improvements in the Studio. Our patients are increasingly turning to the internet and smart phones to communicate with us, patients are busy people and we want to make their lives run as smoothly as possible.

Patients may be suprised to know that we have a fantastic fan page  on Facebook that constantly keeps updating with all things Olivers with excellent photographs and video clips.
The boss is a big twitter fan and you can follow him at  @sunderlandsmile  where he has the biggest following of any dentist in the country we think.
We are particularly excited about our new i Phone app which you can download for free at the i phone app store  at Olivers Dental Studio . Search it on your phone , its fantastic !
While we are blowing our own trumpet after the Marketing win , Olivers are one of the few practices in the world to have their own interactive e magazine . You can view this exciting form of our newsletter by a simple click  . Give it a try , its very clever.

So there you have it  , a brilliant night for our team ,and we look forward to making 2011 equally exciting with more new developments.

Dentistry for the Berber Tribe - Morocco Charity 2010 - Sunderland dentist

Earlier in 2010 I was approached by my good friends Tony and Cally Gedge to support their efforts to set up a brand new dental charity to help people in some of the worlds most isolated areas. Under the banner of Dental Maverick Adventures the idea was to penetrate areas of the world who's healthcare provision was sparse and offer to help with dental care.
The initial project focused on the ancient Berber Tribe in the Rif mountains of Morocco, North Africa.
In all honesty I had my reservations, but it is very easy to find an excuse not to help and so I agreed to join up with a group of dentists from around the UK
Our aims were to help a group of Berber school children with education, simple restorations and extractions where necessary. Planning was difficult and we had to react to the situation we found ourselves in on our arrival.
We departed from Southern Spain on the high speed ferry to N Africa, followed by a mini bus journey into the mountains in the company of our excellent tour guide Domien from Belgium, a top man indeed and priceless to the success of the trip. Our initial stop over was in Chechaouen ( Chef Chowan ), the Blue City of the Rif , a stunning site indeed.

Oozing Arabic character, Chechaouen looks beautiful with its blue painted walls and the quirky streets of the Medina. We were treated to an interesting tour of the city. The sight of women washing their family clothes in the river brought home our displacement from our cosy western lives.

We set off on a six hour trek into the high Rif the following day ending with an overnight stop in the famous trekkers stop off at the Albergue De Azaline, hosted by the wonderful Abdul . In the heart of the illegal hash fields this stop off is a little different to your average Travelodge, but with a degree of hospitality unsurpassed.

Moving on the next day we trekked North to the beautiful God's Bridge , another six hours in the high Rif with small paths and severe gorge drops to focus the minds of one or two of the group, me in particular.A short mini bus journey brought us to the coastal Berber village of  El Jebah. Passing through two towns thriving on the illegal Hash trade was quite an experience, particularly Bab Beret, as wild west as it gets, no eye contact from this dentist !
In El Jebah we met the stunning Berber children of the local school with their severe dental neglect from a sugar dominated diet. A days dentistry for these children, with education , extraction and restoration was extremely moving.Children with nothing, as warm and happy as any you would ever wish to meet.
The lovely children of  El Jebah - Morocco
Heading home the following day I was left to reflect on an experience that would make anyone think seriously about their good fortune living in the affluent west.
I was priviliged to be one of an international team of dentists and doctors from France,Morocco and the UK.
The goodwill I saw will live with me forever with particular mentions to the following people who radiate a desire to help I have never experienced before..
Dr Banani , a French charity worker doing unbelievable work in Africa, a giant of a man.
Luke , the Belgian Ambassador to Morocco, a warm and gentle man oozing goodwill
Domien  our tour guide , I find it difficult to describe the power of this man to make people around him feel good about life - remarkable.
Jas,Chris,Theresa three new friends and excellent dentists. A privilige to be in the Rif with this team.

and Tony and Cally Gedge, who had the vision to drive this project ,make me laugh endlessly and have an infectious energy like no other , two brilliant people.

Team Berber , Morocco , 2010 .   Including doctors, dentists, dental students, Prof of dentistry Casablanca, Pharmacists and assistants to the project.

Thanks also to Jo Barella of Olivers Dental Studio for helping to pull the provisions together for the trip and Chris of Henry Schein for your company's excellent and generous support.

Photographs of the trip to Morocco are available for you to view just click here

Sunderland Dentist and the Morocco Dental Charity Adventure

Hi folks,

Michael, the boss at Olivers Dental Studio here..
I would just like to say a few words about an exciting charity trip I have become involved in starting Friday 24th of September. I was asked by Tony Gedge, a good friend of mine if I would help him set up a brand new dental charity aimed at providing dental care to remote parts of the world. His initial project was to assist the Berber Tribe of Northern Morocco who are suffering from a desperate lack of healthcare.

I will be one of a group of dentists from across the country who will be travelling to the mountainous regions of this beautiful country on a mission funded fully by the dentists themselves.
The aim of the trip is to set up a dental facility for the Berber people and provide dental care whilst we are with them. We understand that it is only a start ,but the impetus the visit will bring will hopefully lead to a permanent centre of care for these people. Over the week we will be distributing medical provisions and using our professional skills to provide as much care as possible to the tribe.

The team are hoping to raise as much money as possible to provide funding for as much medical provision and materials as we can get. We would be most grateful of any help in this respect, big or small, which will go 100% to help the Berber Tribe in a situation were they currently have nothing like this.

It is possible to help us in two main ways...

1. A small donation directly to our charitable fund at http://www.berbertribe2010.org/

2. With the tremendous generosity of Sunderland AFC I have put together a wonderful day out for a prize that money cant buy...

For the Aston Villa home game   23rd October 2010
Lunch for two pre match with myself and Sunderland 1973 Cup winning legend Ritchie Pitt at Amores Restaurant in Sunderland
Two VIP Directors Box seats
Signed and framed Sunderland shirt signed by the current first team
Photograph with one of the players

A prize worth several hundred pounds for a day to remember..
IF you would like to BID for this  fantastic prize please ring us at Olivers Dental Studio  0191 5438642  or
0191 5282340           http://www.oliverdental.com/

We will be drawing the winner on October 10th .

Thank you for your generosity, I will personally guarantee your donations go directly to the Tribes people.

Sunderland dentist Michael Oliver coast to coast challenge 2010

The date ...... Friday September 10th 2010
The place ....  Whitehaven , Cumbria to Sunderland , Tyne and Wear.
The task .....  150 miles of cycling

Olivers Dental Studio owner Michael Oliver foolishly accepted the challenge of his friend Steve from London and Harry Hall of Reds Hair and Beauty Sunderland to cross the country on his mountain bike at the ripe old age of 50yrs. Ego stepped in as he accepted the challenge to ride with these two experienced cyclists and of course the old fella decided to do it without training. Mistake number one...
Starting at the official kick off point at Whitehaven having loaded up with a chicken bhuna in the town the night before could be considered as mistake number two. Not the tactics of Lance Armstrong I'm sure. Whitehaven was like the M25 at the start but the c2c course soon thinned the field as we climbed up towards the Lake District. Destination Glennridding on Lake Ulswater for day one was manageable ,only just, with a comfy bed in a good old fashioned band b a godsend for the aching bones. Soaked to the skin but a good days cycling. At the back of  Michaels mind was the much hyped second leg from the lakes over Hartside Pass and down to Stanhope ,Weardale .

Michaels quote at the top of the gruelling leg to this Pennine summit " if I had seen a farmer with a shot gun I would have begged him to shoot  me "  Long periods in 21st gear on steep hills tests the metal especially when those who had abandoned their bikes to walk were travelling faster - but "I did not walk". Conned into thinking the pass marked the beginning of the long downhill to Sunderland, Michael was disturbed to find several more shocking ascents on the 69 mile ride to Stanhope.
Some gorgeous scenery but the price was a rear that could not be sat upon.
Day three was the home leg and apart from the torture of an early morning climb out of Stanhope the joy of a downhill journey to Sunderland. c2c fans will be familiar with a lovely old converted railway route all the way to Sunderland. It was a lovely day and after the hard work over three days Michaels home town had never looked better to him particularly the last section around the shrine that is the Stadium of Light.
Tradition has it that you have to dip your wheel in the sea to complete at Sunderland , and so to conclude a great three days .....
Another box ticked for this ageing dentist..

Would he do it again? - no chance
Should you do it ?  You bet, a fantastic experience.
Thanks to best pal, Steve Williamson for his effort in organising and convincing Michael that this was sensible to do
To Steve's wife Joan for her logistics, photography and morale boosting.
To Harry Hall for the laughs and Marshall Hall for making these three old blokes feel fitter than they otherwise thought.

2010 The Re Brand Year for Olivers Dental Studio Sunderland Dentist

Hi folks,
Sorry its been a while, but what a year it's been for us.......
2010 has seen in excess of quarter of a million pounds invested in our popular Sunderland dental studio with the aim of leading the way for our patients in dental care provision.
The dental market is a competitive world these days and falling behind isn't on the agenda at Oliver's.

Brand Oliver's
Our well known logo

As a large dental facility it became obvious to us that as well as providing first rate care in a high quality environment our corporate image was becoming important. Our old blue for boys branding was looking dated and a little cold and so with the help of professional advice and an imaginative team of dental nurses we changed direction.

Oliver's Dental Studio
Home of the Red Shoe Girls
Dental demand is often driven by the ladies and so a warmer and softer Burgundy shade was chosen to make the girls feel at home without upsetting the butch boys of the North East. We had a complete redecorate around these colours and our extensive team of support staff had a fashion upgrade. Looking great in their new black and piped red uniforms , we played our trump card ,red shoes !! Boy have our teams red shoes added to our branding.

To compliment our internal changes we thought we had better let the world know we are here and so our front garden had a major hair cut and two new branded signs have grown in the garden. You may be able to see us from space now but boy have they had an impact.

Our most exciting 6 months EVER !

My O my have we packed a lot into the last six months at the studio.
Starting the building work during the worst winter in recent memory was a challenge to say the least but certainly brought out the best in our team.
Our plans to turn our facility from its well known ground floor development to a state of the art, three floor dental centre have now come to an exciting conclusion. From the building team, our fantastic staff and tremendously supportive patients it was a huge team effort.

We were delighted to welcome the North East football legends and radio celebrities Mick Horswill,Bernie Slaven and Bob Moncur as the official opening party in early April. The lads were fantastic and more importantly made me look a lot younger in this photograph.
Looking back , our building work lasted just over three months but included a Christmas break.Incredibly we lost only two surgery days, fantastic for our customer service to patients and keeping our costs down. Take a bow Wearside Construction Services.
What did we do ... in brief , new roof, loft conversion to full working office, staff toilets and showers, first floor patient lounge, two lovely new surgeries,a photographic studio,a facial spa for Botox etc,new staircase, air conditioning, childrens play room, new branding with furniture, carpets and redecorate. All adding up to an a stunning facility and a pennyless owner !
The winter was an exciting time for the team as we have won recognition on a National level. In January the team were proud win the Best of the Best Award for Extreme Patient Services in London . Challenging for the award were some stunning teams from around the country and so were we pleased , you bet !

Breaking news on the award front is that twelve of our team have just returned from the Probe Dental Awards in London having been highly commended by the judging committee - WOW ! One of the most prestigious awards in dentistry and we are highly commended, one proud dental studio let me tell you !

We now feel we can offer the people of Sunderland, Durham and Newcastle dentistry in a stunning facility. We have eight dentists offering all aspects of cosmetic dentistry form tooth whitening, porcelain smile makeovers and implants and wide ranging family dentistry with hygienist back up. We are a centre for facial aesthetics including Botox, dermal fillers and acid peels.
We always welcome new patients http://www.oliverdental.com

Spring is in the air !!

At the end of three fairly stressful months for myself and the team things are looking up...

1. The big expansion at Olivers Dental Studio is nearing completion as the carpets go down and the tradesmen jump ship.

2. Spring has finally shown its face after the longest winter I can remember

3. The team, all thirty of us, have been nominated for team of the year at the Probe National Dental Awards in London.

4. We won the Best of the Best Award at the MOPD National Conference in London in January.Reflecting excellence in marketing and extreme patient care, we were suitably proud to win this outstanding award.

5. I managed to get a four day ski break to France.Good news for me and particularly good news for the staff at Olivers who probably enjoyed the rest themselves !

France in the mountains in the spring - heavenly

Its been a pretty busy month as you can imagine but three of our dentists managed to attend a Face Peel course in Manchester. We are finding facial treatments are becoming more and more in demand as patients seek high quality facilities and clinical expertise for their Botox and facial filler therapy. Our face team have responded to the growing demand for the highly successful acid peel treatments now available for skin rejuvenation, by attending the highly respected CODE Acid Peel course.

As part of the Studio enhancement we now have a purpose built spa room for our facial treatments and tooth whitening therapy.Patients can enjoy relaxing music in a non dental environment with aromatherapy and skin care products at hand.Drs Crothers,Oliver and Bastey are highly qualified in the safe and painless administration of these "ten years younger " facial treatments. As the Face Team at Olivers Dental Studio, they will provide you with the very latest treatment procedures

Give our reception team a call on 0191 5282340 for more information on our feel good about yourself face treatments.

Our next blog will look back over the big expansion project with a before and after photographic tour - watch this space.

To finish, we would just like to pay tribute to the genius of Darren Bent at Sunderland FC. Not only a top bloke but a must for the England team in South Africa Mr Capello.
