Changing lives with a smile

I am often asked how I can get pleasure out of a career in which looking in peoples mouths forms a large part of my day. I can understand the question but I would like to try an show you all why it can be a truely rewarding experience.

I would like to introduce you to Darri , a new visitor to the practice.
Darri came to see us with a frustration associated with his spaced smile. He is a very motivated chap and very sociable and understands the importance of a nice smile when meeting people.
Darri has very healthy teeth which made life easy for us when discussing options for smile improvement. We explained the orthodontic (brace) options to him and also the potential placement of porcelain veneers as an alternative.
The veneer option was preferred as it offered Darri a quick fix to the problem. It was also an appealing option as correction could be achieved with the minimum of tooth reduction. We advised a mini smile makeover of six veneers.

Treatment was carried out over a two week period with high class temporary veneers placed in the interim. The placement of temporary veneers has the advantage of being a trial for the patient and a guide to the expected outcome.Darri also had some tooth whitening of his lower teeth to allow a little balanced whitening to the new porcelain shade we chose together.
I think you will agree the transformation to Darris' smile is impressive and has given him a tremendous boost in his confidence to smile.
Darri was kind enough to explain to us how he felt the outcome of this treatment made the visits and his investment well worth while...

"Following my treatment it has made such a difference to me - I used to be so shy to smile - now I make sure I really do smile with confidence "
"I would have no hesitation in recommending Olivers Dental Studio to my family and friends and to all of you men out there thinking about changing their smile do it ! Its not just a girlie thing "
Whilst we do not spend all of our lives changing smiles I think you can perhaps understand the job satisfaction that we can feel when treating our patients.
Attitudes to smile appearance have changed dramatically over the course of my career.
Should you wish to discuss with us the extensive range of cosmetic tooth enhancement therapies available to us, including tooth whitening ,white fillings ,veneers ,crowns , bridges and implants, call us up at...

A week in the life

Hi folks, thought it might be nice to have a Sunday night look back on my week.
Tonights picture has not a jot to do with dentistry but I am quite proud of it. Proud for two reasons, its a canny picture taken with my pride and joy Canon 5D mk 2 and secondly as its the worlds best on my doorstep.Living next to the Riverside, home of Durham CC,county champions second year running, certainly has its attractions.
Photography has been a passion of mine for many years, going back to my 21st birthday present, the classic Canon AE1 bought for me by girlfriend now wife Elizabeth bless her.Could blog endlessly about photography but thats another day.
As for the week ... well my focus has been dominated by the need to replace a departing colleague at Olivers Dental Studio.
A full time dentist helps an awful lot of people in a week and so Im sure you can understand the priority that surrounds the need to appoint a new dentist.
Thanks must go out to the excellent support I received from dental friends at the NEPD (North East Private Dentists Group ) with their ability to spread the word regarding the available post. I received two applications from candidates of the highest quality with CV's awash with academic achievement.I found it a thankless task to choose one of the candidates feeling a little like Len on the Strictly dance off. I really would have liked to appoint both applicants but current surgery space limited this option.
So who did I choose ? Mr Oliver Bailey , a fantastic appointment of real quality. I now know what Steve Bruce must have felt like when Darren Bent joined his team.
Oliver has just returned from a six month stint in Perth,Australia and brings a wealth of dental skill and know how to our growing team. When I get my act together with my camera I shall do a more formal introduction of Ollie to you all. Aesthetically pleasing he is girls so watch this space.
Certainly a weight off my mind which now clears the decks for the big push towards practice expansion which should be kicking off within the month.
I ended the week with a day off at a golf course deserving of a mention. As guest of Pete Fryer,Sunderland FC physio I attended Boro chairman Steve Gibsons' new baby, the Rockliffe Hall Golf Club. Quality establishments always energise me and it don't get much better than this place. Designed to be exclusive (and expensive)this facility claims my vote as top golf facility in the North. £2,250 a year ho hum but if you get a chance to try it, snap their hands off for a day.Customer service on a par with top USA courses, lovely club house and fantastic,if immature, course. Lovin it !
So a great week for moi, a weight off my mind with a top dental appointment at Olivers and big push now on the new surgery.

The starting point

Hi everyone.
We ahave recently received some exciting news for the future of the Studio. Sunderland City planners (bless them ) have agreed to allow us to expand our dental facility. I thought you might like to have a look at our starting point, which,I might say, we are already very proud.
Our current seven dentist facility is entirely ground floor based ,the upstairs presently being residential for one of our nursing team.
Over the next few weeks, when we pull the project together, our plans include........
New childrens play area with video games and computer based education facility
Two large new surgeries in the upstairs front rooms
Upstairs patient lounge
Dedicated Botox and facial filler spa room
Photographic studio
Extensive staff changing facility.
Full loft space conversion to produce a large working back office and clinical storage area
Seven or eight on site parking areas for patients to ease side street congestion.
So there we are a little dip of the toe in the water for you in what could be a very exciting time for patients and staff alike. Costing a fortune it may be but we think its worth it. Patient expectations are rising, particularly in the private sector,we hope to meet those expectations.
Have a good day,
Michael Oliver
