Sunderland AFC North Africa Supporters Branch
I need to take my hat off to the people of Sunderland and Sunderland football club themselves who chipped in over 150 Sunderland footy shirts for us to hand out to the people of the little Moroccan village of El Jebah in the foothills of the Rif Mountains.
Whats it all about ?
As part of the newly formed Dental Mavericks Charity http://www.dentalmavericks.org/ who recently visited Morocco to help treat the mountain children of El Jebah I (Mick the dentist from Sunderland - Olivers) thought it would be nice to hand out more than toothbrushes to the locals.
On our visit last yeat we treated like Santa Claus as we gave the children crayons and colouring books in a village where gifts are thin on the ground.
Like most Sunderland supporters I have a cupboard full of out of date or out of size Sunderland shirts. Thinking it might be a nice gift for the children and, as it turned out the adults too, we loaded up our suitcases with the red and white treasures. It should be noted that we could have taken hundreds more but for the disappointing response of Easy Jet who wanted nearly £300 extra suitcase tariff for what was in effect a charity donation. Black mark EasyJet even with our protestations.
With the strength of the Premier league brand, the kids instantly recognised the red and white stripes, even in this isolated African village and frenzy of locals suddenly appeared. From the village mayor to the local elders, a Sunderland shirt even out of date, carries a bit of cudos out in North Africa.
It quickly became clear that demand was going to exceed supply as what seemed like half of the Rif mountain Berber Tribe seemed to join the queue.
Still a hundred new Sunderland supporters wasn't a bad start and maybe when we head back to Morocco next year to continue with the dental visit I may be able to convince easyJet that a little genorosity in their aircraft hold could generate a whole lot of goodwill from the kids of El Jebah.
With thanks to friends and patients of Olivers Dental Studio and Sunderland AFC , in particular Ged McNamee and the Academy for their shirt donation.

Helping African Children 2011 - Dental Mavericks on tour in Morocco
What started as a ripple in 2010 with the first visit of the newly formed Dental Mavericks charity to beautiful Morocco in North Africa, this year grew into a wave of dental care in El Jebah at the foot of the Rif mountains.
Let me introduce you to the 2011 Dental Mavericks team who for eight days stepped out of a privileged life in Europe to help a group of school children who's lives aren't blessed with the dental care we take for granted.
The group, of which I am privileged to be a founding member, includes dentists and their support staff from across the UK and joined this year in their efforts from Belgium ( Domien our marvellous guide and translator) and Spain ( team Gedge and the lovely Jess ) .
Why do it ?
In our first visit last year we were disturbed by the raging and untreated dental disease we found in the most beautiful of children in this lovely village in the foothills of the Rif Mountains. The children, from age six to twelve, were suffering tremendous decay rates on the back of a high sugar intake consistent with Moroccan tradition of diet. As well as sweet eating, the Moroccan mint tea and honey intake, coupled with poor to non existent oral hygiene and zero dental care are an explosive mix.
We found the youngsters to be carrying severe decay of their milk teeth and adult back teeth and of no surprise to the team, a frequency of dental abscess rare in Western children. Our sights had to be lowered to cope with this acute disease, mainly by extraction of diseased teeth and an attempt at restoration and decay control where possible.
Our first visit was an emotional strain, as pioneering dental visitors to the area we had the difficulty of carrying out dentistry in school classrooms, perhaps not ideal.
All of this added up to the pain free treatment of 160 children , non of which had seen a dentist since our visit last year.
The kindness of our suppliers and friends also allowed a move to dental education, with hundreds of toothbrushes and toothpaste distributed to the children, combined with some brilliant efforts from our support team, initiating tooth cleaning education where before there had been non.

Our first visit was an emotional strain, as pioneering dental visitors to the area we had the difficulty of carrying out dentistry in school classrooms, perhaps not ideal.
So to 2011 and this years visit .......
Backed by the enormous generosity of patients and friends of the Dental Mavericks and some dental companies, in excess of five thousand pounds of funding was put to good use.....
The first priority was equipment and the three field dental chairs we bought made a huge difference to the children's comfort . The photograph above shows the first of the chairs being handed over to a visiting Moroccan dentist for use in the village health facility. The kindness of Oliver's Dental Studio patients raised £500 to bring this chair to El Jebah.
As one of the dentists practicing in last years school class room let me tell you this was an enormous step forward. The second major improvement was the purchase of significant quantities of Western dental equipment including forceps and sterilisation products. The kindness of our suppliers and friends also allowed a move to dental education, with hundreds of toothbrushes and toothpaste distributed to the children, combined with some brilliant efforts from our support team, initiating tooth cleaning education where before there had been non.
The 2010 visit was only a start but left the dentists drained from the clinical restrictions they found .
2011 has been a huge success with many smiling faces, school children who had known pain now free of swelling and discomfort, having been treated in an environment we would be happy to treat our own children in.
The Mavericks finished off their visit with a breathtaking tour of Fes and the surrounding areas by road and included a two day trek of the Rif Mountains.
One thing is for sure , we will all be back to this wonderful part of the world next year to help move this to an even higher level.
Our aim is to include western restorative treatments and hygienist back up in 2012. Of 160 children seen, our dentists witnessed only one tooth filling in a child population ravaged by tooth decay. We aim to change things for the better !
Thanks for the memories Morocco
Special thanks for support on this trip must go to ..
Chris Wooley and the Henry Schein team for their effort and outstanding genorosity

Painting Africa Red and White with Sunderland Dentist Olivers Morocco Trip
Now a year old , the Dental Mavericks Charity once again is heading for North Africa to provide dental care to an area who's children rarely have access to health care of any sort.
The Award winning Mavericks Dental Charity continues to grow, as a small group of UK dentists head back to the North of Morocco to continue with the excellent work started in September last year.
Included in the group and a founder member of the charity is Sunderland dentist Michael Oliver, who was moved by what he and his colleagues found last year and vowed to return with an even bigger and better service this year. In a trip fully funded by the dentists themselves, Michael and the team have been able to buy an enormous amount of dental equipment and supplies to help the young children of the area.
Lovely Miss Sunderland, Philippa Attle, helping with our Sunderland shirt collection.
As well as providing much needed health care the team continue to build links with the local villages of North Africa and with this in mind enjoy taking gifts over for the local population. With Sunderland AFC building links themselves in Africa , Michael thought it may be a nice gesture to take the children and teenagers some football shirts as he travels back to the country.
"The locals were delighted with the small gifts we brought last year and so I thought it would be nice to distribute Premiership Sunderland football shirts this year".
"Anyone who can donate a previous years shirt or indeed a shirt they have grown out of would be a really nice gesture"
"We already have been overwhelmed by peoples generosity including several shirts donated by Sunderland AFC themselves, tremendous"
Anyone who can help with a shirt donation please call in at Olivers Dental Studio , 27 Durham Road, Sunderland 0191 5282340 http://www.oliverdental.com
Hundreds of pounds raised in the last year have been used by the Dental Mavericks to purchase dental chairs , instruments and materials to provide Western standard dental care in this area of Africa dreadfully short of health care of any description. Anyone wishing to help can donate through Dental Mavericks web site.
Thank you very much on behalf of the children.
