Surrounding Myself With Excellence - Meet Our New Dentist - Dr Peter McQuillan BDS

Its been a pleasure to be the Principal at Oliver's Dental Studio for thirty years and believe me you learn a lot !

Lesson number one ..... Surround yourself with highly skilled professionals and a talented team of support staff.

The outcome... a happy team and an ever growing flow of patients who appreciate we are trying to offer the best possible dental care.

It is with sadness that we are to lose one of our most respected dentists, Dr Iain Morrison, who will be leaving the Studio at the end of May to start his own practice in Northumberland. Iain has been a huge asset to us and we wish him well in what is sure to be a successful future as a practice owner in his own right.

As one door closes we are delighted to welcome one of the country's leading young dentists to step straight into Iain's shoes. With lesson one never far away from my thoughts it is a delight that the new door opens with such a high flying new clinician joining our award winning team.

Ready to meet Peter ?

Here goes ....

Let us introduce you...

This is Peter McQuillan, a graduate of the highly respected Glasgow Dental School at the University of Glasgow.

This softly spoken Irishman from Ballymena, lands on our doorstep with a remarkable CV bristling with clinical skills which will be of huge benefit to the patients under his care. He has a broad based interest in all aspects of dental care, with particular skills in restorative dentistry and cosmetics. Peter rubs shoulders with some of the top dentists in the country as an advisor on the board of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists. He has studied extensively following graduation and brings with him a hunger for life long learning in these exciting times for dentistry.

Peter balances his hard work as a clinician with an endless list of interests away from the surgery.

Just a few as a taster ..

A car addiction. Peter has been able to drive since the age of seven and as well as tinkering with cars has been known to race them too, even owning an articulated lorry,a fire engine and multiple 4x4 s
He can build houses, fly aeroplanes, invests with skill in the stock exchange ,a boxer for many years and a talented rugby player. Not to mention being a handy golfer.

He has a passion for cooking, has travelled extensively and has been a Hollister model.

I could go on ... this is one interesting dentist.Sunderland, you don't know whats about to hit you and I'm proud that we are able to bring such a talented clinician to our city.

Peter will be starting his clinic at Oliver's at the end of June.
Contact our team on 0191 5282340 for the chance to to meet Peter as a patient.

2013

A 30 year celebration

As the year draws to a close I realised how fortunate I have been in so many ways. 30 years of marriage to Elizabeth this year and 30 years since qualifying in a career that has freed me to be very fortunate. I am very grateful.

This blog takes a whistle stop look in few words at why we have been so lucky this year, whilst letting the images of the year tell the story.

New Year 2013 - Dubai - A week in the Address Hotel, Downtown Dubai. Stunning views of the worlds tallest building from our room on the 41st floor. Seeing Dubai welcome the new year from such a great vantage point was fantastic.

April and a lovely weeks break driving up the coast of Scotland past Loch Lomond to Glen Coe and on to Fort William and Skye. Surely one of the most beautiful driving in Europe, particularly with the fantastic early Spring weather we were fortunate to experience.

The High Atlas and Sahara desert..

Raising £6000 with ten great friends in N Africa for the Dental Mavericks charity was an experience I will never forget. Starting at 7000 feet in the Moroccan Atlas mountains and cycling for a week to include two days in the Sahara was tough but tremendously rewarding with sights few are lucky enough to experience. Thank you Tony and Cally Gedge and above all tour guide Domien. Just wonderful.

  More cycling madness ....

400 miles in 5 days raising funds for the fantastic Sunderland Foundation charity. 35 of us raising nearly £40000 in wonderful countryside from Dublin to Belfast to Scotland and on to the Stadium of Light. wonderful people ,wonderful experience. Well done Susan and Harry Hall of Reds and the Foundation team amongst many others for organising such a great event.

End of June saw a lovely trip to Majorca to relax and enjoy a little more cycling at the impressive Reeds hotel with good friends Susan and Harry Hall.

One day break to the British Open - Muirfield  and four days of world class sport at the Ashes, Durham. Fantastic to see the Ashes won in style six hundred yards from home. Thanks England, brilliant.

A lovely family holiday in the summer - Mina Salam hotel - Dubai

Had a great few days at Armathwaite Hall , Bassenthwaite in October with Liz. Great hotel in lovely grounds in the Lake District. Thoroughly recommended.

Cornwall with Liz
First time, lovely place,

Thank you 2013
You were special.

Michael Oliver.

Saving Christmas for the Children with 1034 SunFM

As news filtered through that Christmas might be cancelled, the team at Olivers were asked by Sunderland's top radio station, SunFM, if they could help !

The Elves had gone on strike over working conditions and without a major shift in policy, Santa had a problem on his hands !

We had a great day at Olivers on Thursday as Mark Black hosted his popular day time radio show, live from the reception at Olivers Dental Studio in Sunderland. The five hours of fun was combined with  a celebration of Studio owner Michael's 30 years in practice. Several of our most loyal patients over the thirty years joined the magnificent choir from St Annes school as Christmas Carols filled the Studio. The lovely Miss Sunderland 2013 joined the fun as she had her picture taken with the school children on Santa's Sleigh.

SunFM hosted a meeting with Elves representative, firebrand left winger Derek Hatton from Liverpool and Studio principle Michael Oliver. After a long meeting, a solution to the Elves strike finally surfaced. Olivers had agreed to set up a competition for one lucky family to travel on the Polar Express to meet Santa and his Elves on Tues 17th December with their very own solution to the big Elves strike. We hope this is going to save Christmas, the ideas are already coming in. Lets hope the winning family can come up with a solution,we are sure they will. Hundreds of entries are flooding into the SunFM studio and Olivers Dental Studio in East Herrington ,Sunderland.

Trying our best to have fun as well as helping people with their dental problems has always been at the heart of the success of the Studio.

"Possibly the best day we've had in the Studio in 30 years" - Michael Oliver

Entries to the Polar Express trip to meet Santa are available at reception at Olivers Dental Studio        ( 0191 5282340 )  or at reception at the 1034 SunFM studio off Wessington Way, Sunderland.

Special thanks to the great staff at SunFM including Simon Grundy and Danielle Moore for their energy. Cakecetra cakes of Sunderland and Sunderland Rotarians for the excellent sleigh. Anya Gould,Miss Sunderland for being lovely and all of the wonderful staff who work at Olivers and went the extra mile, you know who you are.
Particular mention to Anne Marie and the children of St Annes School Sunderland, who were magnificent Carol singers.
Our friends of 30 years who came to support us on the day made it so special and of course SunFM's Mark Black for holding the day together.

Thank you all...

Michael Oliver
